Love Red Deer began in 1979 with the capture of Red Deer from the bush in the Rotorua area. We were fortunate to have several exceptional animals in our foundation herd.
Adding to these a combination of imported bloodlines, comprehensive performance recording, selective breeding programmes and determined culling we have developed a quality herd and an exceptional hind base.
Over the years we have used imported bloodlines from UK, Warnham, German, Hungarian, Jaegersborg Danish, Woburn and Furzeland.
Performance recording and evaluation of both individuals and family groups over a number of generations has highlighted consistent representation of particular deer genetics. Selective breeding programmes (natural, AI and ET) and culling aimed to produce early fawning, excellent growth rates and temperament, and impressive velvet and/or trophy potential have proved successful.
The stud has been consistently represented in prizes for a number of velvet heads and now hard antlers at North Island and National Antler competitions. “Awesome” is another product of the stud and our best to date with 520 SCI at 4 years. It was both sad and unfortunate that he died mid-year.
All deer are farmed at Rotorua on grass hill country with some supplementary maize or silage over winter. With over 20 years of breeding we offer some of the best Red Deer genetics available in New Zealand.
